Rivian’s first EV police cruiser is here: Meet the patrol-ready R1S

“We have created both our electronics and our own software,” says Wassyd Bensaim, chief software officer at Rivian, as he shows me around the new vehicle. You can find more of my first drive experience in the video on this page. Rivian has big plans for the future, in addition to its potential IPO. Tesla has promised to roll out its Semi for years and has mentioned plans for a van in passing but hasn’t entered the commercial arena quite yet. Rivian only went public with its business in 2018, but it’s been around in one iteration or another for quite a while.

Along with these, Rivian said it had plans for a “new lifestyle provided by car-sharing.” On one hand, the R1T burned more range than, say, a Hyundai Ioniq 5 or a Tesla Model 3 would have on the same drive. On the other hand, it had more than enough juice to get it all done.

Rivian said it wanted to develop “an integrated portfolio of vehicles and services to advance the shift to sustainable mobility.” Our network of DC fast chargers is opening up to all electric vehicles. Just pull up and plug in if you’re a Rivian owner, or tap to pay for all other EVs. We’re installing over 3,500 of these chargers along popular routes and highways so you can charge up and get back out there.

It’s a lab car and it could be straight out of a Transformers movie. It’s one of the main ways EV maker Rivian tests new software features before they make their way to an actual vehicle. All Launch Edition models — the only vehicles Rivian will ship to customers in 2021 — are already spoken for. Rivian is building them at its plant in Normal, Illinois, a former Mitsubishi factory it bought in 2017. The R1S starts at $70,000, gets a range of around 300 miles at launch, and is available in a five-seat or seven-seat configuration.

  • It will be followed by the Adventure Package next January for the same price, as well as a less expensive Explore Package for $67,500.
  • Rivian beats Tesla, Ford, GM to build first EV pickup The average price for the additional vehicles reserved was $93,000 and Scaringe said it currently has a total of over 90,000 reservations.
  • This will likely be either an SUV or truck but will be unrelated to Ford’s pre-existing plans to create a Mustang-inspired electric crossover and an electric F-150 pickup, the company said.
  • Michigan-based Rivian was originally called Avera Automotive before changing its name to Rivian Automotive, then simply Rivian.

Some of the protests alligator indicator have resulted in graffiti on Tesla signs, charging stations set on fire, even Molotov cocktails being thrown in one dealership’s lot. While most positions listed are in Michigan, the other facilities are also building out, including the Illinois manufacturing plant. If this is the kind of company you’d like to work for, the good news is that Rivian is hiring.

By early 2017, the company had completed its purchase of a former Mitsubishi facility in Normal, Illinois, to become its North American manufacturing hub. As a result, the company received grants and tax abatement from state government for bringing jobs to Southern Illinois, although it had less than 200 total employees at the time. The R1S and the R1T are expected to have selling prices starting at $70,000 and reaching $90,000 for fully-loaded models, per the Times. Rivian indicates that it has tens of thousands of reservations, for a deposit of $1,000 each. Rivian may be small, but Tesla is another software company, and the market share of these new companies is likely to continue to grow.

  • For its 7,000-pound curb weight, the R1T is also remarkably agile.
  • Rivian calls the electric SUV an “adventure vehicle” for a reason.
  • By the end of 2017, Rivian announced its two alpha prototypes were complete.
  • If this is the kind of company you’d like to work for, the good news is that Rivian is hiring.

It’s the key reason why I believe that, though it may be 16 candlestick patterns on a tough road in 2025, Rivian is going to pull this off. It syncs with your Rivian Account so you can set charge times through your vehicle’s touchscreen and you can always check your charge level through your Rivian app. Many EV makers, including Tesla, are moving to a zonal system as it’s easier to manufacture, but also allows automakers to more easily push over-the-air updates with new features. But as soon as I set up the sport drive mode on the display and adjust my mirrors and steering position, I put my foot down and feel how responsive the vehicle is – and how much fun it is to drive.

We’re the first members of the media to tour these labs ahead of the new-vehicle launch. The second-generation R1S and R1T are just now becoming available, with prices starting at $75,900 for the R1S and $69,900 for the R1T. Scaringe is determined to shatter conventional views about electric vehicles. “We have a number of untruths–a truck can’t be electric, an electric car can’t go off road, it can’t get dirty, it can’t tow, and truck buyers don’t want something that’s environmentally friendly,” Scaringe told the Times.

In July of 2021, we reported that Rivian was in fact on the hunt for a second manufacturing facility in the US to compliment its current plant in Normal, IL. With this feat, Rivian has become the first electric pickup maker, beating the likes of Tesla, Ford, and others to the finish line. Rivian currently has one EV joining roads across the US, and two more in the pipeline for this summer. Below is a breakdown of each as well as a small rumor mill about what the future may hold for the automaker and its next round of EVs.

We found evidence of Rivian expanding its service center presence in Orange County, CA. The proposed permits would allow the facility to perform routine maintenance 24/7 and inspect EVs from the production like before they are delivered to customers. Similar to the R1T, the R1S will initially roll out in three variations starting with the Launch Edition this year. Concordantly, the Launch Edition R1S is also sold out, but promises a range of 300+ miles on all three versions including the Adventure Package and Explore Package due in January 2022.

Rivian will now sell its commercial van to any fleet, starting at $79,900

Electrification questrade forex and technology can create a truck that’s incredibly capable and fun to drive,” he added. Rivian won the race to build the first electric pickup truck Americans love pickup trucks and drop a lot of money on them, so automakers were competing to bring the first battery-powered truck to market. In what could well be new information to readers outside of the US, Ford’s F-Series pickup trucks are the best-selling vehicles in America, and have been for some time.

Dunnage containers at our plant are reusable and made from ocean-bound plastics. Rivian will allow some EV owners to upgrade their R1S or R1T to unlock more range and power through an upcoming software update. The update unlocks your vehicle’s full potential and even includes a new “Rally mode,” but it won’t be free. Beginning in three initial trims starting with the Launch Edition in 2021, the R1T’s will come with Rivian’s mid-tier battery pack, which the automaker claims to offer a range of 300+ miles. Now, of course, modern cars are a little more complicated than that. Software can’t give the tri-motor Rivian R1T 850 horsepower, after all.

Two years after being founded, Rivian was immersed in both electric vehicle technologies and autonomous driving capabilities. From day one, the automaker set out to create luxurious and battery-powered vehicles, but the rugged outdoorsy SUVs we see today weren’t always the focus. Elon Musk has indicated that Tesla will offer a pickup, but has not released a design. EV companies like Rivian and Tesla have been ahead of the game from a tech perspective for some time now, but the thought-process at the legacy carmakers is starting to change. That’s perhaps best embodied by Volkswagen’s decision to partner with Rivian, which will see future Volkswagen vehicles, like the new ID.1, get software that’s based on Rivian’s.

Scaringe said that the Rivian name was chosen at the time as it pays homage to the Indian River Lagoon, adding the first three letters of River to the last three of Indian. All in all, it’s a very capable lifestyle truck, adventure rig and gear-hauler, but it won’t outpace a Jeep Wrangler or a Toyota Tacoma in the most extreme of situations. But capability with the R1T also includes three “wall socket” style 120-volt outlets, including two in the bed itself.
