Rivian’s first EV police cruiser is here: Meet the patrol-ready R1S

“We have created both our electronics and our own software,” says Wassyd Bensaim, chief software officer at Rivian, as he shows me around the new vehicle. You can find more of my first drive experience in the video on this page. Rivian has big plans for the future, in addition to its potential IPO. Tesla has promised to roll out its Semi for years and has mentioned plans for a van in passing but hasn’t entered the commercial arena quite yet. Rivian only went public with its business in 2018, but it’s been around in one iteration or another for quite a while.

Along with these, Rivian said it had plans for a “new lifestyle provided by car-sharing.” On one hand, the R1T burned more range than, say, a Hyundai Ioniq 5 or a Tesla Model 3 would have on the same drive. On the other hand, it had more than enough juice to get it all done.

It’s a lab car and it could be straight out of a Transformers movie. It’s one of the main ways EV maker Rivian tests new software features before they make their way to an actual vehicle. All Launch Edition models — the only vehicles Rivian will ship to customers in 2021 — are already spoken for. Rivian is building them at its plant in Normal, Illinois, a former Mitsubishi factory it bought in 2017. The R1S starts at $70,000, gets a range of around 300 miles at launch, and is available in a five-seat or seven-seat configuration.

Rivian indicates that it has tens of thousands of reservations, for a deposit of $1,000 each. Rivian may be small, but Tesla is another software company, and the market share of these new companies is likely to continue to grow.

It’s the key reason why I believe that, though it may be 16 candlestick patterns on a tough road in 2025, Rivian is going to pull this off. It syncs with your Rivian Account so you can set charge times through your vehicle’s touchscreen and you can always check your charge level through your Rivian app. Many EV makers, including Tesla, are moving to a zonal system as it’s easier to manufacture, but also allows automakers to more easily push over-the-air updates with new features. The second-generation R1S and R1T are just now becoming available, with prices starting at $75,900 for the R1S and $69,900 for the R1T. In July of 2021, we reported that Rivian was in fact on the hunt for a second manufacturing facility in the US to compliment its current plant in Normal, IL. With this feat, Rivian has become the first electric pickup maker, beating the likes of Tesla, Ford, and others to the finish line. Rivian currently has one EV joining roads across the US, and two more in the pipeline for this summer. Below is a breakdown of each as well as a small rumor mill about what the future may hold for the automaker and its next round of EVs.

Two years after being founded, Rivian was immersed in both electric vehicle technologies and autonomous driving capabilities. From day one, the automaker set out to create luxurious and battery-powered vehicles, but the rugged outdoorsy SUVs we see today weren’t always the focus. Elon Musk has indicated that Tesla will offer a pickup, but has not released a design. EV companies like Rivian and Tesla have been ahead of the game from a tech perspective for some time now, but the thought-process at the legacy carmakers is starting to change. That’s perhaps best embodied by Volkswagen’s decision to partner with Rivian, which will see future Volkswagen vehicles, like the new ID.1, get software that’s based on Rivian’s.

Scaringe said that the Rivian name was chosen at the time as it pays homage to the Indian River Lagoon, adding the first three letters of River to the last three of Indian. All in all, it’s a very capable lifestyle truck, adventure rig and gear-hauler, but it won’t outpace a Jeep Wrangler or a Toyota Tacoma in the most extreme of situations. But capability with the R1T also includes three “wall socket” style 120-volt outlets, including two in the bed itself.
